My Story

Saturday 1st February 2020 started well for our family as Kim, Kaitlyn and Marie took part in their first 5k park run together and had a great morning of laughs and fun!!

As many of you will know, Kaitlyn and her mum, Callum's mum and Marie's sister (Kim) was involved in a terrible car crash shortly after finishing the park run. Kaitlyn was extremely lucky and did not suffer as much as her mum, but Kim wasn't as lucky and suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (life threatening stroke) and spent a number of weeks on the Pencarrow ICU at derriford hospital, during her stay Kim had to have 2 life saving operations which included a craineotomy (part of her skull removed to allow for swelling).

Before Kaitlyn (11 at the time) and her younger brother Callum (8 at the time) visited their mum on the ward they were given a book about what to expect when visiting a loved one in ICU which helped prepare them for seeing their Mum. When they visited, Kim, Kaitlyn and Callum were all given matching teddies to feel close to eachother which really helped them all.

Kim is now on her road to recovery and doing well, all things considered, but still a long way to go. As a result of the subarachnoid hemorrhage Kim now lives with aphasia and dyspraxia and physical disabilities.

Kaitlyn and Callum have decided to raise money for derrifords intensive care units to help other families, like they helped ours.

Together we have set ourselves quite a hard challenge.

Kaitlyn, Callum and Auntie Marie will be cycling, walking and running the distance that Kim travelled from the accident back to her home again!! In total being 154 miles!!! From Helston to treliske, onto deriford, back to treliske, down to barncoose before retuning home in June, 4 1/2 months after the accident.

As a family, we would be extremely grateful if anyone was able to make a small donation to our fundraising.

Thank you for reading, we will keep everyone updated with our progress, follow the hashtag #kcmICUfundraiser to see how we're doing!!
