My Story

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Derriford Hospital Neonatal POCUS team is undertaking a special challenge to complete 50 lung ultrasound scans before 1st of September and raise funds in support of neonatal care.

Every ultrasound scan represents more than a number. It represents a fragile life, a family navigating uncertainity, and  commitment to delivering the very best care to our smallest and most vulnerable patients.

At Derriford Hospital, we are priveleged to care for babies requiring the highest level of of neonatal support. our tertiary Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICU) looks after some of the sickest newborn infants in the South West, including extremely preterm babies born as early as 22 weeks' gestation.

These tiny babies face enormous challenges from their very first breath. Every day, our dedicated multidisciplinary team works tirelessly to provide expert, compassionate care and given each baby the best possible start in life.

Leading innovation in Neonatal POCUS.

We are proud to be pioneers in Neonatal Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) education and innovation.

Our immersive two-day hands-on training programme, supported by state of the art intelligent ultrasound simulators, has received exceptional feedback from delegates, with many describing it as the best neonatal ultrasound course in the country.

To date, we have trained 36 clinicians from within our network and beyond in both basic and advanced Neonatal POCUS applications, including:
-Cranial ultrasound
-Lung ultrasound
-Central line tip confirmation
-Targeted liver scan

It has been incredibly rewarding to see clinicians take these skills back to their local units, improving care for babies closer to home.

And this is just the beginning.

We are committed to expanding the programme further, equipping more neonatal teams with the skills and confidence to deliver safer, faster, and more precise bedside care.
